HR/Payroll Overview

Last update:

The HR/Payroll page (Accounting/HR > HR/Payroll) is the starting point for everything to do with your people: personnel records, time, time off, and getting paid. Like the other menu pages, it shows one tile per item you have permission to use. Click Configure This Page to hide tiles, drag them where you want them, or switch between large and small tiles. See Home Page and Menu Pages.

The tiles #

  • Personnel – employee and contractor records, including each employee’s payroll tab. See Personnel Overview.
  • Time Tracking – clocked and scheduled time, manual time entries, punch corrections. See Time Tracking Calendar.
  • Leave Requests – ask for time off, or approve and deny requests. See Leave Requests.
  • Leave Balances – every employee’s vacation, sick and other leave balances. See Leave Balances.
  • Pay Runs – turn a pay period’s hours into earnings, lock the period, and export to your payroll service. See Pay Runs.

The HR/Payroll tab appears only if you can use at least one of these items.

How the pieces fit together #

  1. Set up (once, under Setup > Company): Pay Codes, Work Types, Overtime Rules, Leave Types and Policies, and Company Holidays.
  2. Set up each employee on the Payroll tab of their personnel record: pay type and rate, exempt or not, default work type, pay rates by work type, and the employee ID your payroll service uses.
  3. Record time: clocked time, service order time and manual time entries are combined into one set of hours per employee (see Timesheet Report). Each hour carries a work type and a pay code.
  4. Review with the Hours by Work Type report, with or without overtime rules applied.
  5. Run payroll: create a pay run for the period, check its warnings, approve it (which locks the period) and export it to your payroll service.

TBA does not calculate payroll taxes, file returns or pay employees. Your payroll service does that; TBA supplies the earnings and keeps the time, leave and cost records.
